I have to admit, I was in something of a malaise about this weekly feature that lasted for a good month. I felt like maybe the strange media outlet that is Youtube wasn't as deep and varied as I had once hoped. I wandered through the site avoiding all of the TV clips, music videos and indistinguishably annoying vloggers, trying to find something unique and entertaining. Just when it seemed there was nothing left for me to analyze and/or mock, I stumbled across a fascinating video using the only true method of Youtube-ing, the random connection. I didn't set out to find "Ohhh Myyy Goddddd!", it just happened to be in the Related Videos section of another clip that most certainly was not at all related to it. I'm still convinced that I found something remarkable and now is my chance to prove it.
"Ohhh Myyy Goddddd!" is something I never thought I could actually find on the Internet. It is a fairly accurate depiction of what it's like to be in a romantic relationship. All jokes of basement-dwelling neckbeards aside, this is still quite a surprise as people who have the option to interact squishily with other people tend not to waste their time making videos for the Internet. That's why even though there are easily a billion people connected to the Web and presumably a good number of them aren't socially isolated malcontents, the majority of Internet content is still over-representative of people who live on the "depressing" side of the human experience.
See, when people who have actually had sustained romantic relationships are single, they tend to fixate on only certain aspects of being in a relationship. That's why a significant percentage of the Internet is pornography. "Ohhh Myy Goddddd!" is an artful reminder that there's a whole lot more to being in a relationship than getting laid on a consistent basis. For example, half the fun of being a boyfriend is taking the opportunity to be a childish sonofabitch in front of the one person in the world who currently finds it charming. Sure, she'll eventually loathe you for it and probably break up with you because of it, but while things are good it's a sweet proposition to be tolerated.
Even better than this reminder, "Ohhh Myyy Goddddd!" gives us guys a peek into what it must be like to be somebody's girlfriend. From what I can gather, it involves receiving more attention than a puppy in a preschool and finding new ways to talk like a toddler without ruining your sex appeal. Yes, human mating is so strange that it's possible there's no way we could have come to dominate this planet without some kind of outside help.
I suppose what I really want from media like Youtube is content I can't find anywhere else. Television will always beat out home video in terms of sheer insanity (here's proof) and no vlogger will ever be as amusing or intellectual as authors and honest satirists. What Youtube can do that no other outlet can match is show us sides of the human experience without any pretense of entertainment or education. They're slices of life, it just so happens that a lot of people's lives are a wash of pop culture and masochism.
