A woman in Iowa found herself kicked off a friend’s Facebook page and became so enraged that she set fire to the
woman’s house. The victim, Nikki Rasmussen, and her husband Jim were forced to flee their home in the middle of the night after Jennifer Christine Harris set fire to their garage in an attempt to burn down their home with them in it.
Authorities say the dispute began after Harris became upset after a party she had asked Rasmussen to create an event for turned into a bust when most everyone invited declined. Apparently she blamed Rasmussen for it. This led to her eventually unfriending Harris and that appears to have pushed her over the edge. She’s been held on $100,000 bond on first degree arson charges.
Insane? That goes without saying. I’ll be the first to admit being unfriended can sting and even hurt (I’m still a bit wounded over being not only unfriended but blocked by my cousin for reasons still unknown!), but you deal with it and move on. This woman apparently invested way too much into the site. Being unfriended is not the end of the world and certainly nothing to ruin your life or anyone else’s over. Maybe Facebook should reconsider the use of the word “friend” and call them “Facebook connections” instead? I mean let’s face it-I think nearly everyone has at least a few people on their friends list they hardly know at all. Maybe if we thought of everyone we talk to on Facebook as connections rather than friends, things like this wouldn’t happen. What do you think?
