A high school football coach in Maine was forced to resign after accidentally posting a nude photos of himself on Facebook. Paul Withee noticed his error a half hour later and deleted them, but not before a busybody parent saw them and filed a complaint with the school board.

How does one accidently post nude photos on Facebook? He claims he thought he was sending a private message. Obviously he’s pretty ignorant on how Facebook works, but was any harm done? He had no students on his friends list, and promptly deleted them when he realized his error. Yet the parent still had to make sure he’d pay for his admittedly very stupid mistake. While I think it’s a very stupid idea to post nude photos of yourself online, I think it was very mean spirited of the parent to complain, especially since it was obviously a mistake. So he sends nude photos to people online? Again not the least bit smart, but if the people receiving them are legal and consulting adults and presumably single, whose business is it?

The superintendent said he believed it truly was an accident and felt bad for him, and Withee himself said he felt ashamed and humiliated and had never posted those kinds of photos online before and promised he never would again. I assume he resigned out of shame, and not because he was asked to. It will be a great loss for the school as he had been their coach for nearly 20 years and won 10 championships. He was also a math and science teacher.
